In 1940, the movie house changed hands and received another name – changing to the Hiway Theatre and continued to operate under until the 1980’s.īy the 1980's the building appeared rundown and was purchased by Irvin Merlin in 1985. The building underwent a name change in 1936 and became known as the York Road Theatre. The official registration and financial information on Hiway Theatre, Inc. The theaters are "affiliated," siblings, if you will. However, each theater continues to operate as its own separate entity. Members of the Hiway Theater receive reduced admission prices at the other Renew theaters. That cost efficiency is needed to make the Hiway financially sustainable. The separate theaters work with each other in various ways, particularly on special programming.īy running three theaters, Renew will bring cost efficiency to the Hiway's operations. The administrative staff and managers have primary duties at one theater, but cross-train to cover vacations and turnover and cooperative activities.

Renew pays its staff, of course, which currently consists of 16 full time admin staff, 13 full time managers, and approx. Again, Renew makes no profit – it is a "pass through" company that supplies services at cost.
The Renew Board of Directors is run by its client theaters. Renew manages each theater according to each individual mission to: Exhibit art, independent and world films Educate the community about the film and media arts Serve as a community and charitable resource for the arts Preserve the historic theaters as cultural resources. Renew was created to allow the same management team to operate multiple theaters, while allowing each theater to maintain its own separate, local identity. Renew is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 tax-exempt, management company, which also operates the Ambler Theater, the County Theater and the Princeton Garden Theatre. Renew agreed and started managing the Hiway in mid-May 2013. The Hiway board invited Renew Theaters to assume management of the Hiway in order to make it financially sustainable. We are also one of the region's premier cinema destinations, offering, in addition to our regular programming, a variety of special events. We are nonprofit, community-based movie theater, specializing in independent, art, and foreign films. The Hiway Theater opened in 1913 as the "Jenkintown Auditorium."
